They would say, “Remember when I broke my leg, and you helped me bring my crops in?” “Do you remember when our crops failed, and you helped us survive the winter?” “Do you remember when . . . ?” And then they’d give the person the choice, “Do you want to be this person that we all know you are, who has been such an asset to our community and has helped us grow and thrive, or do you want to be this person that has done this harm? It is your choice. But we know you can do better.”35
